Reading "with" my kindergartners happens during shared reading. Shared reading happens in lots of different ways. You can see it as I point along with the words in a big book, when we point and sing along with the words on a song chart, and as we read and circle letters and words in our morning message. I plan my week using Literature Themes. I do a book a week. The books I base the themes around are predictable text books....meaning they rhyme, or have repetitive verses. Like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? or Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We "visit" the book each day of the week during morning group time. My "loose" schedule for the book is Monday: Picture walk through the book and first reading, Tuesday: 2nd reading of book and "All About Our Book" chart (charachters, setting, author, etc), Wednesday and Thursday: choral reading and/or phonics/language lessons from book. For example, we might write all the rhyming words down on cards, put them on the pocket chart, and then compare their spelling ("what do you notice?"), or we might talk about Opposites, or compound words, or find the popcorn (sight) word of the week in the text. Friday: We try to act out the story in some way.
Need some help getting started with Shared Reading? Here are some excellent books....I refer to these 6 books often!
