Literacy

This is a related extension from the book The Hungry Thing by Jan Slepian.  I created a "thing" using Djinkers clip art.  I glued the picture of the thing to an old cereal box.  I then made felt food pieces.

I tell a story about our "Thing" who really likes all the things that go into pizza.  We feed him all the ingredients, as the children figure out what they are.  He likes "beese" (cheese), "grausage" (sausage), "thromatoes" (tomatoes), and "gushrooms" (mushrooms) among other things.

I then make sure that the hungry thing spends time at the literacy center for the children to spend time exploring on their own.  When I use this as an independent (center) activity, I put LOTS of different foods out for the kids to find rhymes for.
