There are a couple of different ways my kids read in my classroom. In my schedule, when the kids finish journaling, they have "book time". Book time is a time to choose and read books in our book center. I organize my books in several different ways. First, I created a database in Microsoft Excel in which I can find any book by author, title, or subject. My books are put on the shelf by author's last name. Books A-G have a red sticker, H-M have a yellow sticker, N-R have a blue sticker, and S-Z have a green sticker. I also have some books (Junie B. Jones, Clifford, Franklin, Little Critter) in baskets according to their character. This works pretty well for me...the kids have access to all of my books...but I can still find the one I need fairly quickly.
When they are ready, I start the kids in Guided Reading groups. I bought a subscription to readinga-z.com . Some of the best money I ever spent! I work with groups of 3-5 kids reading the leveled readers. For the kids who are not ready for Guided Reading groups, we work on letters, letter sounds, and other pre-reading skills during this small group time.
