Journal Writing in Kindergarten

We are on our 4th set of journals this year.  We started the year with a blank paper journal called "My Picture Tells A Story".  We focused on drawing detailed pictures, using lots of colors, and adding backgrounds.  We read lots of books with detailed pictures that helped tell the story for inspiration.

We then moved on to "My Labeling Journal".  We learned how to use our kindergarten spelling to sound out words and label things in the pictures.

Our next journal was called "All About Me", and we started writing sentences.  "I like _______." with our focus on capital letters, spacing, and a period at the end of the sentence.

Our latest journal is called "My Opinion Journal".  We are expanding that idea with adding a very important word....because.  This journal is all about expanding on our "I like" sentences by describing the reason why we like things.  We are still in the beginning pages of this journal that includes prompts, but later this week, my kids will have blank pages so they can give their opinion about any topic they want.   Just LOOK at their awesome writing.  So proud of them.

In a couple of weeks, we will start our "Nonfiction Journals" where we will draw a main idea and 3 supporting facts, then write 3 sentences.  We will continue to our "Once Upon A Time Journal" where we get to use our imagination to write amazing stories with a beginning, middle, and end.  Our last journal is called "My Five Star Writing" journal, in which each page has a checklist for

1)capital letters at the beginning of each sentence
2)spaces between words
3) sight words spelled correctly
4) ending marks (punctuation) for each sentence
5) three sentences

LOVE seeing all the progress we have made this year, and can't wait to see what they write next!
